Tom and Jerry heading to big screen

Timeless cartoon cat and mouse Tom and Jerry are coming to the big screen in a computer-generated film for Warner Bros, Variety reported.

The classic Hanna-Barbera characters will be cast in a story that shows how Tom and Jerry first meet and form their rivalry before getting lost in Chicago and reluctantly working together during an arduous journey home.

The movie is part of a push by Warner Bros to revitalise its stable of classic Hanna-Barbera characters with big-screen movie extravaganzas. Other updates the studio is working on include The Jetsons and Yogi Bear.

Tom and Jerry originated in 1940 at MGM, which made 114 animated short films through 1960. In 1992, Warner Bros released Tom and Jerry: The Movie as a feature-length cartoon. The new approach will mix live action and computer-generated animation. Warner Bros hopes the movie can mimic the success of Alvin and the Chipmunks, which last year earned more than $US360 million ($A548.78 million) worldwide.
